A single US Submarine carries 16 missiles with 10 warheads/missile each warhead of at least 160 kilotons (8 times the size of Hiroshima) data presented is circa 2004. I believe that there are 16 missile subs for a total 2,560 warheads.
The ground systems are composed of squadrons of 5 control units each controlling 10 missiles, a missile wing is composed of 5 squadrons. There are at least 3 missile wing locations for a total of 750 missiles. Each missile carries up to 10 warheads of up 10 megatons/warhead for a total of 7,500 warheads.
The airborne part of the triad is composed of land based fighters and bombers, and carrier based aircraft also nuclear capable. The Navy also has a cruise missile repertoire of nuclear delivery platforms. An estimated 3 to 5 thousand nuclear warheads available from the airborne leg of the triad.
Even if 90% of the warheads were to be destroyed over 1,500 warheads would rain down on our enemy. Try to conceptualize the damage that 1500 nuclear bombs, even the baby sized 160 kiloton type, will do to anyplace on earth.
I seriously doubt there would be any winners in this scenario.
Actually, the US is should be thanking Richard Nixon for initiating talks with the Peoples Republic of China. PRC has become a manufacturing partner for US technology that IPhone that you use may have been designed by Apple engineers but it is built in the PRC.
If the manufacturing aspect does not reassure you that we are safe, consider that the US owes the PRC several trillion dollars. I doubt that the PRC would let anyone harm its biggest credit customer.
The above facts, I believe lays to rest any fears of a nuclear attack on the United States.
How about conventional wars like Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, etc... Easy task.
1. Mind our business. Do not be the world's policeman. What happens to Israel, Egypt, Yemen, etc should not be our business to try to correct. Play Pontius Pilate.
2. Develop fossil fuel energy sources, in the US, Canada, Mexico, and other Latin American countries.
3. Develop nuclear energy to its fullest extent.
4. Develop cost competitive reusable energy sources.
5. Initiate realistic energy conservation programs. Initially, it may require the rationing of energy. It was done during WWII and it was pretty effective.
Let the good times roll.

In recent years, have you been to the border of either Mexico or Canada? In 2009, it took me 4 hours to cross the Canadian border at Calais on the way up and 6 hours on the way down. Even my Newfoundland dogs had to have a booklet of papers including pictures to prove their identity. The crossover at Niagara Falls was a little bit faster on the way over but on the way back it was another 6 hour event.
Yes-The planes hit the WTC and we were amazed. If we had stayed out the Arab-Israeli conflict beginning in 1947, we would not be part of the beat down. The illegal attack on Libya (Congress did not declare war) just added a couple of hundred thousands of potential suicide bombers to the rolls. Tonight, CNN,NBC,CBS, etc announced that DoD Secretary is concerned that Israel will attack Iran because Iran is allegedly developing a nuclear weapons capability. I am very puzzled about who decides what countries can have nuclear weapons and who decides what countries cannot.
According to history Israel initiated hostilities in 1947, in 1956 Israel, France and England attacked Egypt over the Sues canal,in 1967 Israel beat the Arabs to the punch, in 1973 the Arabs attacked Israel and since then Israel has in many instances has treated Israeli Arabs much like the US Southern plantation masters treated slaves. UN resolutions 242 and 338 are ignored by Israel and the US and other members of the UN Security Council choose not to do anything.
IMHO- The best course for the United States is to announce a Pontius Pilate policy towards military involvement anywhere in the world.
Respectfully, you do not understand our enemy, radical islam. We have been fighting against their quest to make islam the dominant religion by any means possible for over 200 years. The quran orders all muslims to convert the non-believers to islam through peacefull measures first. But if that does not work, either kill them or tith them into poverty and let them starve. Any muslim who tries to tell you that islam is a religion of peace is lying. It is a religion of hate, surpression of all women and non-muslims and one that advocates any and all forms of violence and torture in order to achieve world domination. Jihad is not a personal and internal struggle to live as allah wants them to like all muslims would like non-muslims to believe. Jihad is a war against all non-muslims that is to be waged to the death and any muslim who is killed while waging jihad is immediately raised to martyrdom and celebrated by the entire muslim community world wide. Doubt that? Just listen to the watered down and limp wristed condemnation of the muslims who attacked the US on 9/11/2001 by muslims citizens of the US. Where is the outrage? Where are the muslims marching in the streets demanding the radicals stop conducting violent acts in the name of their religion? Their condemnation of violence against non-muslims is muted because the quran calls for the violence. It is part of their faith and to denounce the violence is to denounce jihad. Something a muslim will not do. So even supposedly "good" muslims will stand idly by and watch other muslims murder in the name of islam. They will go as far as to impede police and other government authorities in their efforts to find the muslim perpetrators of violence and thwart future attacks. They, all muslims, are muslims first. They do not speak out against another muslim regardless of how much bloodshed he has caused or is planning to cause. Federal law enforcement has recieved no help at all in thwarting violent attacks on American soil and interests abroad. All attacks that have been prevented since 9/11 were prevented without the help of the muslim community in the US or abroad. Muslims have done nothing to stop violent jihad because it is what they believe in.
Even if we pulled out of their countries and hung our ONLY allie in the middle east, Israel, out to dry, muslims WILL continue to attack us in their quest to establish islam as the dominant religion and sharia law the law of the world. That is their goal. It has nothing to do with what country they live in and who is occupying it. They may scream and cry about the American surpression and Israeli barbarism and tell the world they will be happy when Israel is wiped off the map. But that is a lie. They will only be happy when sharia is the law of the world and islam is the only faith that the global population is allowed to practice.
If you doubt the tenacity with which they persue their global domination, dust off the history book and find out why Tripoli is mentioned in the Marine anthem, The Battle Hymn of the Republic. When Minnesota Congressman Kieth Ellison, a muslim, was sworn into office, he took the oath of office with his left hand on the Quran originally owned by Thomas Jefferson. Ever wonder why Jefferson needed a quran? It was because our trading vessels were being attacked by muslims pirates overseas and some 20% of the US revenues were being spent on bribes to the pirates operating out of Lebanon so that American ships can conduct trade without fear of attack. Jefferson obtained an English translation of the quran to better understand the enemy. Modern day American muslims would like everyone to believe that Jefferson wanted to familiarize himself with islam as part of an outreach by our young country to the muslim world. That could not be farther from the truth. It had nothing to do with outreach to islam by an early American president. Jefferson knew that islam is the enemy. The United States Marines Corp was formed in response to radical islam's jihad against our seculary governed country. Our fight against islam is nothing new. It is not as a result of our meddling in the middle east since 1947. The Conflict goes much farhter back than that. Fortunately for the radical muslims, westerners have a combination of short memories and the willingness to forgive. We should never have forgotten. It could have saved thousands of lives and not only those lost on 9/11. We do not attract the anger and rage of islam because of our occupation of middle eastern countries. We atract it on because we are nieve and forgetful infidels. Even if we did actually learn from history, our Judeo/Christian tendency to forgive will be our undoing where islam is concerned.
There is a lot of material available that will open any readers' eyes to what islam is all about and why western civilation needs to take their threat seriously. I would recommend adding three books to your reading list to better understand what western civilization is up against regarding the very real threat from radical islam.
1. "Because They Hate" by Briggite Gabriel
2. "They Must be Stopped" by Brigitte Gabriel
3. "Muslim Mafia" by P. David Gaubatz and Paul Sperry
I would add the quran to the list but the only real quran is written in Arabic. Any other translations of the quran are watered down in order to be more acceptable to westerners. Trying to understand islam by using an english translation would be a waste of time. The only way to get the real message to muslims from the quran would be to have an Arabic speaking Christian or Jew interpret the Arabic language quran for you. Its the only way to get to the truth about what the quran really tells muslims with regards to conducting jihad against the infidels.
The above mentioned books are must-read books for anybody who feels as Ron Paul does that if we only pull our troops out of middle eastern countries and stop meddling in their affairs, radical muslims will stop threatening and attacking western interests. While I do agree that we have no buisiness "nation building" for people who prefer to live as they did around 700AD, simply leaving them alone is not enough. They will continue to attack until islam has dominated the world. They must be defeated and the only way to do that is to drop the PC crap and send them all to their 72 virgins.

Wow, the way you describe it, radical Islam is exactly the same as radical Christianity. The 6th pillar of jihad has not existed forever, and not all practicing muslims agree with or follow the 6th pillar - and that pillar applies equally to arabs and non-arabs, muslims and non-muslims, etc. Even IF you succeeeded in wiping the planet of all 6th pillar jihadis, some other zealous self-proclaimed crackpot prophet of some religion would come up with another extreme concept justifying massive power/land grabs and murder - and some group of idiots would follow it, recruiting other idiots as they go.
Hell, even our Mormon pal Romney's religion was started by a known gold-digger and their Doctrine of Covenants/Pearl of Great Price have been drastically contextually altered over the years, I was raised in that racist religion and remember being taught in friggin' Sunday school that Africans were black because they were cursed by God and inferior. Bunch of smug white asshats teaching impressionable kids to be racists. Awesome. :-(
Then you have the ultimate irony of our Israeli pals as they took the hand dealt to them as persecuted Hitler-era Jews and started practicing it on Palestinians. By today's definition our Founding Fathers were radical extremists and the Revolutionary War an act of terrorism.
It seems as though people who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
Is the proper response here really an eye for an eye? Maybe we can just go for the War Games version, nuke the entire planet, specifically power and money hungry men (who really seem to be the problem regardless of race or religion) and be done with it.

I used to think the same way. They can't all be practicing jihad. What about Israel? They are not without blame for the unending conflicts in the ME. People of other faiths have committed atrocities in the name of religion too. All good viable points when conversing with reasonable people. I thought the same way until I worked elbow to elbow with a group of Palestinian muslims for 8 months. Over time, some of the things I heard from them during the course of casual conversation did not quite match up with my preconceived notions. That's when I started digging in and reading up on islam.
You should read that first book, "Because They Hate". Google the author, Bridgitte Gabriel. Her life experiences as a Christian growing up in Lebanon gives her the credentials to speak authoritatively on the matter of islam and the role of jihad in the lives of practicing muslims. You'll see that there is a lot more than meets the eye when viewed from the author's perspective. While Muslims were deliberately targeting and taking shots at Lebanese women and children, Israeli hospitals were treating muslims wounded in the battle in Lebanon as well as Christians and other Jews. According to the author, the hospitals prioritized who was cared for first by their medical condition and not by what side of the fight they were on. Then the muslims would disrespect their hosts in spite of the fact that had their hosts not treated them, they would have died of their injuries.
Don't confuse islam with any form of religion. It goes much deeper than how and who they worship. There is no God and country. For muslims, its only islam and sharia law. While Christians and Jews can be faithful to their beliefs and have some sense of national pride, islam is just islam. They see a single islamic global caliphate where national origin and allegiences do not exist. Everybody lives for their mullah and islam with no distractions or diversions af any kind. That is the ultimate goal of islam and those supposedly "moderate" muslims will silently stand by and watch other muslims commit atrocities in the name of islam. You are mistaken about jihad. It is very much a part of the life of any devout muslim and ordered by the literal translation of the Arabic quran. It tells them to kill the infidels. The "people of the Book", as muslims call Christians and Jews, are inferior to muslims and it is OK to murder them if they do not convert to islam.

The title Because They Hate alone sets the tone of what the author has to say and makes the context suspect to me. It's not exactly meant to be a neutral, objective writing.
Since the days of Isaac and Ishmael, Judaism, Christianity and Islam have their faith in the same God - the God of Abraham. Both the Bible and Quran speak of the same angel (Gabriel) delivering God's message. Each has their roots in Paganism. Whereas Judaism and Christianity both strive to follow the law of the land insomuch as it does not directly conflict with religious tenets, Islam is a way of life and includes its own laws (which is what I assume you mean by no God and Country or Nationalism). However, Christians and Jews and their respective offshoots don't necessarily have national pride either, and many religious people don't fall into the God and Country category. Just ask the Protestants and Catholics in Ireland. The three monotheistic religions have massacred each other in record numbers since the splitting of the tribes. That will never stop – NONE of them - because each feels a divine right and justification to off the other. Men, power, land, religion, money = bad.
Still, not all Muslims believe in or support the addition of the 6th pillar. The 6th pillar came about with the help of al-Banna and Qutb of the extremist group called the Muslim Brotherhood (which was helped by the US as they trained soldiers in Afghanistan like our pal Bin Laden to defeat Russians to protect the American interest in their Precious, the oil pipeline). The assertion of the extremists was that Muslims lost the Six Day war against Israel because they were not pure enough in their adherence to the Five Pillars. All other scholarly interpretations of jihad have the mujahid/een fighting back only in defense of self, and under strict sets of circumstances/rules. Like all religious groups, the Sunni and Shiite have infighting over doctrinal interpretations and the recognition of the Sixth Pillar itself.
Of course, we could simply stop buying their oil and financing the extremists (good luck, the robber oil barons would be screwed, too - ever wonder why the industry standard in America hasn't been the same as the European one of Prius level gas mileage in every car?). Or maybe we just stop supplying them with weapons and training to do short-term battle to further our desire for oil so they can then turn around and use the greed of the 1% to visit their wrath upon the rest of us? Wishful thinking.

She doesn't pretend to be neutral or objective in her writing. One might say that her first two books with copywrite dated 2006 and 2008 respectively are outdated. But if you read what she has to say and keep it in the context of what has happened since the writings its hard to argue with her. Anyone who tries to live as a Christian in a predominantly islamic country would have a bone to pick with their muslim neighbors. But it doesn't make the facts presented in her writing any less accurate once political correctness yields to the truth of what islam wants for the world.
I've read all about everything you mentioned in your last post from books friendly to islam as well as by authors who are alarmed by islam. One thing that I came away with as absolute truth is that if a radical muslim and a moderate muslim were arguing about whether or not islam calls for violent jihad, the radical will win the debate. There are many passages in the quran that call for violence against non-believers that are so plainly stated there is no confusion about the meaning. Violence is a way of life for a devout muslim. The same goes for violence against women. Men are told they may lock their wives away in a room and beat them (but not too badly) if they fail to obey the dominant male of the house. There are too many passages in the quram that promote violence and too much in the hadith that cause those who choose to live as Mohamed did to murder others, abuse women and children and want to sacrifice their own lives to further the cause of islam.
If a Christian claims to live as Jesus did, he will show kindness and compassion towards both his friends and his enemies. If a muslim claims to live as Mohamed did, someone is going to die.
